Note: As this post dates back to 2011, we are not attempting to keep the list up at this point. In light of this, some of the social sites below are longer active but are still listed in this archive piece.
Below is a list of some of the most popular social media sites, all arranged by category (i.e., bookmarking, blogging, news, etc.). Besides the obvious factor that these sites allow you to get involved in their communities, they also allow you to create a unique profile which includes your own custom URL, a link (or sometimes links) back to your site and information about you and/or your company.
While engaging the features and communities of social media site can be very beneficial to your business, social media profiles additionally help you to accomplish two things: build inbound links to your site and help manage online reputation. That is the primary focus of the chart below.
The Chart Explained
- Site – Logo and link to site’s home page
- Title – Refers to title that will appear on your profile page. Most often this will be the username you select but at times it can be customized separate from the user name. This can be an important asset when using social media profile pages to manage online reputation for a brand or product name.
- Bio – Simply an area in the profile where you can add a brief description about yourself, your company or even the services you offer.
- Links(s) – Most social media sites will allow you to link back to your site. Some even allow you multiple links as well as the ability to connect to other social media profiles.In this chart, a “1” means you can link to one site; a “1+” means you can link to more than one site; and finally, the addition of “S” means you can link to other social media profiles.
- Followed – Are links followed or nofollowed? A simple “yes” or “no” will be entered here.
- Description – Brief description of what social media site offers.

I do have a question for anyone listening. Do you think that while building out these profiles one ought to be patient and build over time? Or do you think it’s alright to go relatively fast? Sure, I’m not going to build them all in a week…but what about 3-5 weeks. (And it still wouldn’t be on all of them.)

@Lumin – I think with any kind of link building effort, moderation is key, at least with this and some other types of link building. For example, if you all of a sudden get 1,000 new links and they are all of one type (i.e. social media profiles), could trigger a red flag.
That being said, put out a great piece of content (linkbait) and get tons of links and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s a natural process anyway.
